Weruché Uzoka – Renowned Author, Poet, and Playwright Celebrates 18 Years in America by Releasing Trio of Captivating Plays

In the words of Weruché Uzoka – The plays are a celebration of diversity, gratitude to my past and a prayer for the future.

Esteemed author, poet, and playwright Weruché Uzoka previously known as Weruché George, is set to mark a significant milestone in her journey as she commemorates her 18th year in the United States on August 12, 2023, by releasing her first three remarkable plays.

With an unwavering commitment to bridging cultural gaps and fostering connections, Uzoka introduces her captivating plays – *Festac Baby*, *My Husband is a Warlock*, and *Ọdịnihu*. These plays not only showcase her artistic prowess but also encapsulate her desire to unite her African heritage with her American experiences.

Born and raised in Nigeria, Uzoka embarked on an impactful journey that led her to America 18 years ago. Her works are beginning to resonate with audiences across the globe, and now she is excited to present her first foray into playwriting. With her plays, Uzoka aims to create a bridge between her roots in Africa and her newfound home in America.

“Storytelling has a duty to connect us and bridge cultural gaps,” Uzoka remarked. “I began writing “Festac Baby” an actual story of my mystical birth, in high school, but life took over,” she said. “An African proverb says: Eat when the food is ready; speak when the time is right. I believe now is the right time for these plays to come into being.”

Each play in this collection is a testament to Uzoka’s unique perspective and creativity.

1. Festac Baby is an epic play set in Lagos, Nigeria, during the historic FESTAC 77. The story weaves together multiple narratives that converge during the birth of a female child, exploring themes of cultural identity, and the awakening of the global black consciousness.

2. My Husband is a Warlock, a satire that takes the audience on a transformative journey that transcends cultural boundaries and speaks to the universal quest for personal freedom, self-discovery, and the indomitable power of the human spirit.

3. Ọdịnihu is a tale of love, memory, and destiny woven together to create a captivating narrative that revolves around two soulmates who, against all odds, find themselves reunited in a new existence with unfamiliar realities. As they grapple with the challenge of controlling their memories of a past incarnation, their journey unfolds amidst the backdrop of their current lives.

In her commitment to authenticity and artistic collaboration, Uzoka is actively seeking to work with independent directors and producers who share her passion for storytelling. She believes in the power of a collective effort to breathe life into art and hopes to work with individuals to help bring her distinct vision to the stage.

She invites audiences to embark on a journey of emotion, discovery, and connection and envisions her plays as a bridge that unites cultures stimulates dialogue, and enriches the artistic landscape.
