Activist Cynthia Umezulike (Ph.D.) Pioneers the World’s First Human Rights in Fashion Centre to Solve Environmental and Human Rights Issues in the Fashion Industry
Cynthia Umezulike (Ph.D.), an international human rights lawyer and activist is the founder of the world’s first Human Rights in Fashion Centre, which advocates and activates sustainable practices in the fashion industry as a catalyst to solve climate and human rights issues.
The Human Rights in Fashion Centre which opens in London, United Kingdom in 2022 will fund critical rights-based fashion sustainability research and host the first International Conference on Sustainability in Fashion, Human Rights and Climate Change to raise awareness on the impact of fast fashion on the climate and have productive dialogues to find eco-friendly solutions to preserve our planet.
Further themes of human rights violations in the fashion industry to be explored include modern slavery, child labour, unfair pay, underpaid models rights, exploited garment workers, discrimination, and unacceptable working conditions.
According to the founder “Cynthia Umezulike, Ph.D., “the fashion industry contributes to 4% of the world’s carbon emissions, however, alarmingly the negative impact of fast fashion is not at the centre of global climate change discussion, neither is human rights violations in the fashion industry. It is time to address this endemic and proffer sustainable solutions for the protection of the common person.”
The London based centre will also pioneer the world’s first ‘Re-wear Clothes Walk’ in London, United Kingdom – a movement to bring crucial awareness on the impact of excessive clothing consumption and encourage people to re-wear and re-use their clothes to reduce waste and minimize its negative environmental and social impact.
In line with the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the centre is also home to Sustain X – a sustainable lifestyle concept store which provides eco-friendly lifestyle alternative choices in sustainable materials, conscious wellness products, ethically sourced home wares, clean beauty, and a digital beauty library.
Founder Cynthia Chisom Umezulike (Ph.D.) is an International human rights lawyer, Head of Racial Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Lecturer in Law, Writer, and Activist.
